You could think that gummy fruit snacks are good for you as they are everywhere and contain many popular cartoon characters. In reality, however, they are nothing but a processed sugar disguised to look healthy. So if you are feeding your kids these things, you may want to consider a healthier alternative.
These sugary sweets have actually existed since the early 1900s, but did not become popular until the 1980s. Their popularity rose sharply due to their ability to be cast in hundreds of different shapes and sizes.
What many of us don’t realize is that they’re pumped full of corn syrup, gelatin, partially hydrogenated oils, artificial flavors and colors. And because they contain gelatin, they are often sticky in texture, which can easily lead to tooth decay. Therefore, many dentists do not recommend giving these to children at all.
And while many may argue that they contain some juice, it is not nearly enough to even be considered beneficial. And while you may think the organic ones are better, think again! Even these contain unhealthy ingredients that are disguised and are just as bad for your children.
In addition to being bad for your teeth, they can also cause heart disease, diabetes and obesity in children. So instead of offering a snack that has no nutritional value at all, why not offer a better choice, such as fresh fruits. They offer an excellent source of vitamins and fiber.
If your child is picky, you can also offer dried fruits. But be careful by doing so, as these can be just as bad for you if they are packed with sugar and other artificial ingredients. If he or she does not accept one of them, try introducing them to a fruit juice. Although juice does not contain nearly as many nutrients as the right one, it still has some nutritional value and a much better healthy alternative. Just be sure it is 100% natural and not a cocktail as it contains corn syrup. Eat right and live better for the sake of your children and your own.
