New Delhi [India], May 20 (ANI): Union Health Minister, Dr. Harsh Vardhan, will take the lead as President of the EU World Health Organization (WHO) Executive Board on May 22, sources said Tuesday.
The WHO board meeting will be held on May 22. The Executive Board is composed of 34 technically qualified members elected for three-year terms. The chair’s position is handled by rotation for one year among regional groups.
The main functions of the Board are to implement the Health Assembly’s decisions and policies and facilitate its work.
Union Health Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan attended the 73rd World Health Assembly (WHA) on Monday through video conferencing. WHA is the EU’s governing body World Health Organization.
In his speech, the Minister of Health had expressed his “deepest compassion” for the loss of life anywhere in the world because of COVID-19 and also expressed his “sincere gratitude” for the efforts of those at the forefront of this struggle.
“We in India took on the COVID-19 challenge with the highest level of political engagement. Our Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, personally monitored the situation and ensured a preventative, proactive and graduated response without leaving any stones unable to contain the deadly virus from spread, “Harsh Vardhan said.
The Minister had emphasized that this is the time when humanity should gather.
“On our part, India plays a key role in promoting bilateral and regional partnerships. Under the skillful leadership of our Prime Minister, India has provided important medicines to 123 nations as an expression of solidarity,” he said.
“I stand here to honor the doctors, nurses, paramedics, scientists, journalists, born boys, security personnel, sanitation staff and police personnel – the forgotten roles that today play” superhumans “. They are our real heroes, ”I added.
The 73rd World Health Assembly (WHA) unanimously passed a resolution to conduct an independent probe of WHO’s COVID-19 response.
“I thank the Member States for adopting the resolution that requires an independent and comprehensive evaluation of the international response – including, but not limited to, the WHO results. As I said yesterday, I will launch such an evaluation at the earliest appropriate time,” Tedros (ANI)
