New Delhi, May 10 (ANI): Union Health Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan on Sunday said that National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune, has successfully developed India’s first original antibody test kit – ELISA – for combat COVID-19.

ELISA – enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay – antibody test is a kind of blood test. ELISA kits are similar to fast antibody tests that detect antibodies in the blood to find out whether or not an individual was infected with COVID-19 infection.

“The National Institute of Virology, Pune, has successfully developed the first original anti-SARS-CoV-2 human IgG ELISA test kit for antibody detection of COVID-19. This robust test will play a critical role in monitoring the proportion of The vulnerable population for SARSCoV2 infection, ”tweeted Dr. Vardhan.

According to ICMR officials, ELISA kits are more reliable and cheaper than fast antibody testing kits.

Dr. Vardhan said: “The robust original IgG ELISA antibody detection test developed by ICMR-NIV, Pune will play a critical role in monitoring the proportion of the population exposed to SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus infection. “

ICMR has partnered with Zydus Cadila for mass production of ELISA test kits. Following the development at ICMR-NIV, Pune, technology has been transferred for mass production to Zydus Cadila, which is an innovation-driven global healthcare company.

Zydus Cadila has proactively taken up the challenge of speeding up approvals and commercial production of ELISA test kits so that these can be made available for use at the earliest.

The test is called “COVID KAVACH ELISA”. This is a perfect example of “Make in India” in record time.

had previously reported that the ICMR has planned to use this ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) kit to conduct a study in ca. 75 districts with the maximum number of COVID-19 cases across the country. (ANI)
