No one likes to be sick. But still, there is a good chance that you catch at least one cold bug or flu bug every year. Double this if you have children. What do you find when you’re out and about with a cold, with your diet and fitness plan? Do you leave the ship and tell yourself to start again when you feel better? If so, you may want to revise your strategy to some extent. While you obviously aren’t going to hit the gym and go down through some personal best items, that doesn’t mean you should be a junk food eating sloth on the couch either. Here are some healthy ideas to keep in mind …

1. Drink plenty of water. First, this tip works twice as well because it not only helps you stay healthy, but it can just help you get past your cold as well. You should aim to drink at least 8 to 10 glasses of water, even if you are ill. If you are struggling to get your water intake in, note that you can also make your liquid intake from broth-based soups or teas. Some people find chicken soup, for example, is the perfect liquid to take in while they are bad.

2. Get up and walk – if it’s shoulders and above. The golden rule of activity while sick is, if it’s over your shoulders, you’re free to perform any activity you choose. However, if it’s under your shoulders, you’ll want to rest up at the moment.

Head cold does not preclude you from participating in light to moderate intensity activity. You probably don’t want to do anything super-intense because it will put a strain on your CNS and in turn make it harder to recover but get you up and moving. The increase in blood circulation can be good for providing nutrients to all your body tissue, and this can also help increase your energy levels at a time that you otherwise feel sluggish.

3. Eat adequate protein. It is normal to experience some changes in your appetite while not feeling well. What you always want to make sure you do is eat enough lean protein. You want to get those amino acids in, as this is what will help preserve your lean muscle mass tissue and prevent muscle loss while you are ill.

If you’re only unwell for a day or two, it probably doesn’t matter too much. But if you are sick for a week or longer and are not eating enough protein, this may start to affect you. Focus on lean sources of high quality protein such as …
